On April 29, 2026, Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg will launch a lecture series on the topic of “Abuse of Power,” which will examine the causes, manifestations, and consequences of abuse of power from various academic perspectives.
The lecture series will take place on Wednesdays from 6:15 PM to 7:45 PM (the opening event on April 29 begins at 6:00 PM) and will be offered both in person in the Large Lecture Hall (Alte Mathematik), Bismarckstraße 1a in Erlangen and online via Zoom. This opens up the opportunity for a broad audience to engage with the topic regardless of location.
Abuse of Power as a Structural and Social Phenomenon
Abuse of power is not an isolated, individual phenomenon, but is closely linked to institutional structures, hierarchies, and cultural practices. Especially in organizations such as universities, where relationships of dependency, performance evaluations, and career decisions play a central role, examining power relations is of particular importance.
The lecture series examines these connections and explores how power arises, is legitimized, and is exercised — and under what conditions it can be abused. It also takes into account gender-specific dimensions, issues of diversity, and structural inequalities that can further influence power relations.
Interdisciplinary Approaches and Current Perspectives
The lecture series brings together contributions from various disciplines, thereby enabling a multi-layered examination of the topic. Different academic perspectives offer insights into legal, social, cultural, and organizational aspects of power abuse and shed light on both individual experiences and structural conditions.
In addition to analyzing existing problems, approaches to prevention, intervention, and institutional development are also discussed. The goal is to foster a deeper understanding of the dynamics of power and responsibility and to provide impetus for reflective practice in academia and society.
Exchange and Awareness
The lecture series is aimed at students, researchers, and the interested public and serves as an open forum for discussion and reflection. It offers the opportunity to engage with current issues, learn about different perspectives, and contextualize one’s own experiences and observations.
Especially in the context of gender equality and diversity work, addressing the issue of abuse of power makes an important contribution to raising awareness of structural inequalities and promoting a respectful and responsible organizational culture.
